Album Info:This former Milwaukee Road line was one of several radiating out of the Capital City to be put up for abandonment by the bankrupt carrier in the 1980s, despite the fact that it connected south-central Wisconsin's two largest cities. Along with several of the others, it was rescued by the state DOT and the multi-county Wisconsin River Rail Transit Commission and operated by short line Wisconsin & Calumet until WICT's takeover by the Wisconsin & Southern Railroad, which today operates the line as the Madison Subdivision. It serves as the main line of the WSOR's Southern Division, ferrying traffic north from Janesville bound for points on the branch lines out of Madison, and bringing traffic back from the branches and the Canadian Pacific's line from Portage to Janesville and the outside world. There is also considerable on-line traffic generated in the communities of McFarland, Stoughton, Edgerton, and Milton Junction. Union Pacific ballast trains to and from the quarry at Rock Springs on the Reedsburg line operated in the summers until 2011. The line was upgraded to continuous welded rail in 2010-11 after two major derailments in 2007 contributed to its being slow-ordered to 10 MPH.

Description:  As I was passing through Milton I saw the headlight (of 4173) to the west, and drove over to investigate. At first it was just the three units, then to my surprise yet another headlight appeared to the west. This was 4177 long hood forward, coupled to 4179 and a train.

Description:  There were two crews working with this group of five SD40-2s, I believe they were the T004 and T006 but not sure which was which or what became of the cars from one of the trains (the train as I saw it in Janesville later was just the cut of covered hoppers). Just another day in the bizarro world of the WSOR.

Description:  After running around the other four units, 4179 sits on the wye track that takes the Madison Sub toward Janesville while the conductor radios the dispatcher. I had to leave at this point to keep an appointment in Janesville, but after I got out this unit was sitting on the ramp track behind the roundhouse, so it must have been run there light.

Description:  This may be the first eastbound run of one of the ex-UP SD60Ms on the WSOR (this one had led T005 into Madison the previous evening), and the first widecab power to operate on the system as part of the "official" roster and not a borrowed/leased/run-through or detour unit since the brief tenure of the F45s in the early 1990s. Notice the bicyclists stopped under the bridge to watch, surprising since most Madison bikers seem to be blind to larger, engine-powered vehicles.
