SP Super Bowl Special |
Description: |
At 4:03 on a dark and wet Saturday afternoon the Southern Pacific's 15-car special for Super Bowl XX was about to back in to New Orlean Union Passenger Terminal. However, the dreary weather nicely accentuated the number boards, Gyralight, headlight, extra lights and ground light. The train consisted of SDP45's 3207 and 3201, baggage cars 295 and 298, 10-6 sleeper 292, diner 290, lounge cars 291 and 289 CITY OF ANGELS, and office cars 117 TUCSON, 151 PINE BLUFF, 131 LOS ANGELES, 141 OAKLAND, 99 HOUSTON, 100 AIRSLIE, 106 OREGON, 110 STANFORD and 150 SUNSET. It was quite a train! |

Description: |
The Southern Pacific’s AVHOM (Avondale to Houston Manifest) was leaning into the curve at Raceland Junction, Louisiana with EIGHT locomotives: SSW GP40-2 7632, SD40T-2 8569, GP40-2 7623, NS SD60 6629, NS SD50S 6504, and GP40-2’s 7645, 7661 and 7633. It was common for the SP to put two or three sets of power on this train, because there were more eastbound trains than westbound, and doing this got the extra power back to Houston. |

Westbound SP on Hey P. Long Bridge |
Description: |
This westbound Southern Pacific transfer run was heading up the Huey P. Long Bridge behind 10 locomotives: SD45R 7546, SSW SD45 8978, SD45R’s 7517 and 7550, SD40T-2 8321, SSW GP30 5009, GP35 6653, GP20R 4102 and GP9R’s 3877 and 3816. Two hours earlier the first five units had delivered an American President Lines stack train to the Norfolk Southern’s OLIVER YARD. From there they ran light to the east end of the bridge, and then they coupled on to the five geeps on the transfer run for the rest of their trip back to SP’s AVONDALE YARD at the west end of the bridge. |

One-year-old Cotton Belt GP40-2 7248 -- along with Espee SD40T-2's 8529, 8275 and 8323 -- was stopped on the east approach to the Huey P. Long Bridge. The 7248 had been the lead unit on an eastbound stack train which they had just delivered to Norfolk Southern, and then they returned here running light. After about 15 minutes, an NS crew arrived at the Central Avenue grade crossing with run-through train No. 193. Instead of sending a crew to pick up 193, these four units coupled on to the train -- which had SP B30-7 7764 and SD45R's 7405 and 7402 -- and it went across the river with seven engines.Cotton Belt 7248 was one of the last GP40-2's built. This group consisted of 34 units, SP 7240-7247 and SSW 7248-7273, built in October and November 1984. The only newer GP40-2's were Florida East Coast 432, built in December 1985; and FEC 433 and 434, built in December 1986. The caboose on the right, in the New Orleans Public Belt's East Bridge Yard, was MP 13815. |

Three trains are on the west end of the Norfolk Southern's BACK BELT at Shrewsbury Road. Cotton Belt 8040 and Espee 8026 are on a westbound American President Companies (APC) stack train. These cars arrived from Atlanta on NS train No. 219 and are bound for Long Beach as SP train AVAXT. On the next track is KCS caboose 342 on KCS train No. 55. The KCS has just delivered the train to the NS, and it is on its way to the NS Oliver yard. On the right is KCS train No. 140, the BATON ROUGE TURN, departing from that railroad's West Yard. No. 140 has GP30's 4112, 4103, 4119 and 4106, 48 cars, and caboose 348; but one of the geeps will be set out up the road for use as a switch engine. The Espee train is waiting for a route through East Bridge Junction and onto the Huey P. Long Bridge, while KCS No. 140 needs to get onto the Illinois Central. Since 1985 KCS trains have used trackage rights over the IC to enter and leave New Orleans. |

Westbound SP train AVLFM (Avondale-Lafayette) pauses at Schriever with 26 cars. The train's caboose is parked next to the depot, right on the other side of the antenna tower. The Espee only owned 15 B23-7's, so finding one was always nice; and finding one of the front of a train on a sunny day was really special! |

SP 7375 |
Description: |
Espee SD40R 7375 and SD45T-2 9209 were parked on the old main line with an eastbound train in the Lafayette Yard. The new main line, which ran around the north side of the yard, is right on the other side of the train; while the tracks on this side of the train are Number 1 and 2. The small building on the left housed the electronic equipment for a weight-in-motion scale, and the tall signal helped a crew maintain the proper speed while weighing cars. |
