Ford empties
Title:  Ford empties
Description:  Train AFOB ran from the auto ramp at Ayer Mass through onto NS, forwarding mostly auto racks to Bellevue Oh, where they were sent to various midwestern assembly plants. Here it is sitting on the Buffalo Runner next to the old D&H station, waiting for a new crew to head to Buffalo and a ride on the ex NKP. NS power was typical, and usually ran through to Ayer.

Title:  One that got away
Description:  South of Binghamton, it was not unusual to see Chessie or NS power on RPPY and PYRP. North of Binghamton, not so much. This Chessie unit, now working for CSX, but still lettered WM, was borrowed for a trip north, and is now returning to its usual haunts from its short adventure, leading as the train arrives at Binghamton.

Description:  Guilford ran a variety of symbols, all of which seemed to get worked at Binghamton. This one was a Buffalo-Portland job that has completed its work and now has its 107 cars headed north behind an ex Illinois Terminal SD 39. It has taken the switch to the DLW track that will cross Conrails Soutehrn Tier on the Court St overpass, and will head toward the tunnel.

Hi hood classics
Title:  Hi hood classics
Description:  I dont usually shoot mid consist power, but these NW SD45s were becoming rare, and too good to resist. They were in the consist of BFOA that was parked on track 4 waiting for yard space. Dont recall at this point-almost 30 years later-if they were running or dead in tow. Nice to think they might still be working.

Description:  ABBU, an empty grain move from the Port of Albany to the NS at Buffalo, rolls through Silver Springs just after New Years. Once on NS, it will run the old NKP to Bellevue OH. This was a lucky shot. I was driving home from Buffalo, coming through town and decided to check the signals. This guy showed up just as I reached the crossing. Some days you win.

Turning the power
Title:  Turning the power
Description:  Sometimes the D&H would need to turn an engine of set of power. There was no working turntable at East Binghamton-the DLWs table had been out of service for years, and it would be after CP took over that a new one would be built-so it would have to be wyed via BD. This set is rolling up to Bevier St, where it will change direction, then head down the Buffalo Runner to QD, then back onto the Tier to head back through town into the yard.

Jet powered
Title:  Jet powered
Description:  Guilford established a pair of trains, JET 1 and JET 2 to make some kind of effort to hasten freight velocity to New England. In an optimistic approach by the marketing types, these were called JET 1 westbound, and JET 2 eastbound. Here we see JET 1 coming through Bevier St with 102 cars. It will take the Buffalo Runner to QD, where a new crew will get on for the trip to Buffalo, avoiding the yard and its interinable terminal delay.

Mostly gone
Title:  Mostly gone
Description:  Many of the elements of this scene, taken 27 years prior to this being posted, are now gone. The sempahore-gone. Track 2-gone. The bridge I'm standing on-gone. The power, an SD 26 and an SD 39-gone. NY 70 to the left of the tracks is still there; the hills are timeless. The Sea Land stacks of this SLN 5 now travel via another route; Sea Land itself was sold to Maersk, so theyre gone too. And its been nearly 40 years since EL last ran a train here, at MP 352 near Dalton.

In the valley
Title:  In the valley
Description:  SLN 5 in the Canisteo valley. This is not normally a well lit shot, as its dark side most of the time. I took advantage of the Southern Tier gloom to get the angle not normally seen, and this panoramic view of the valley.

Must be a jet
Title:  Must be a jet
Description:  My notes dont show what train this is, but it was parked at Bevier St. At the time, JET 1 was the only train that did not yard at East Binghamton, so Im guessing this is JET 1 waiting on a crew. In a nice touch, the leader is one of the B&Ms last order of new power, GP40-2 303.

Thats a lot of power
Title:  Thats a lot of power
Description:  A side view of the train seen at a more head on angle elsewhere. I believe this is JET 1, which was typically overpowered, probably in hopes there would be enough units still running at the end of the trip to get it into the terminal.

Guilford looking good
Title:  Guilford looking good
Description:  Much as I hate to say it, the power in a complete set, fresh paint, and clean actually looks decent. Here we see BUME rolling slowly north against the grade as it passes Phelps St
