Eastbound manifest 280 lumbers toward the County Q crossing |
Description: |
About a mile and a half east of here is the "Watertown West" control point, where a roughly 20-mile double track segment ends going east. This is the hold point for eastbounds that will be waiting on opposing traffic for some time (so as not to block this crossing as well as County K to the east), but 281 is just a few minutes away and thus 280 keeps coming, albeit at much reduced speed. |

"BNSF 4721 West, One Main, detector 137.3, no defects. 287 out." |
Description: |
All the Class 1 railroads treat defect detectors a little differently. CN's detectors on their ex-WC territory give an entrance and an exit message that includes the train direction and speed. CP's give an exit message only that includes the temperature, axle count, and track number (on double track sections), but not the direction and speed. They used to report the train length in feet, but this one currently does not. CP is also the only Class 1 railroad I've heard in Wisconsin where the crews acknowledge each detector report over the radio in the manner of the title. |
