Railfan trip, I believe that this was on the NP "short line" at or around Jay Cooke State Park between Carlton and Duluth. We had two RDC-3's with the coach ends back to back, seating for 98 passengers. |

NP RDC trip |
Description: |
in a lot of places and to a lot of people this signal would have been called by its route signal name "Diverging Clear". But on the NP and the SP&S they were not route signals but speed signals. In this case the signal was called "Medium Clear". It was an indication as to speed and not the route to be used thru an interlocking. Two ways that different people in different places did and dared to think about the same things differently! So it once was but is no more! Today everything has to be the same for everybody! |

In the Northern Pacific coach yard near the St Paul Union Depot i found this M of W track test car!!! You can see the commissary building that supplied the passenger trains with the things that they needed--- perhaps you can read the sign from the back side!!! The bridge is 3rd street and it runs from Kellogg Blvd in downtown St Paul up to the top of the river bluffs and the Indian Mounds Park!!! the view of the mighty Mississippi River still is great from there but the different railroads that i was just being to learn about are now gone--- i wish that i could go back &take the pictures that i never did!!! |

You can just barely make out the air tanks for the train &engine brakes on the top of the GP7/9 if you know where 2look!!! This made room 4larger fuel tanks!!! And those might even be 40ft wooden box cars--- i can't really say for sure/ this was 40 years ago, another place &time much different from 2day!!! Mississippi Street was home to the passenger power for North Coast Limited and Mainstreeter which ran west to Seattle and also the St Paul/ Duluth freight power was serviced here--- it was a place where it was easy to find Alco RS2's/ RS3's (if you could tell the difference between them!!!). Also Alco RS 11's could often be found here--- But it is all gone now - the diesel shop and the roundhouse and "the glory of it" were torn down years ago and the land sold!!! If you went there today you would have no idea of what was once there--- many things have changed!!! |

power for Extra 378 west at Northtown |
Description: |
NP 378 at Northtown followed by 3 "b" units 1 f3 and 2 f7's!!! Note the steam engine bell and the white class lamps above the number boards.... meaning an extra train created by the dispatcher to be given what rights that he the dispatcher might so wish to give!!! Running as Extra 378 west out of Northtown on the double track across Minnesota... they could become superior to a passenger train or a second section of a passenger train which would then display green class lamps for a second section following... or perhaps they might even run in the place of a passenger train thus fulfilling its schedule!!! Any of this could be possible--- if the dispatcher wished and willed for it to be so!!! And this is how it was, in the days before computers!!! |

You can tell because this engine is facing east instead of west- the interlocking signals govern westbound traffic to Northtown &Mississippi Street Yard. 2switch engines wait 4their next assignment- notice that unlike on the CB&Q they can face either direction!!! |
