Agnes. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 24 June 1972. Shown here near the 4th Street Footbridge are Penn Central engines #5451, #9944, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. Although coupled to a fully-loaded mineral train, they're just sitting there with engines off pending the resumption of rail traffic in the wake of Hurricane Agnes. Note how rusty these once-highly-polished rails have become! |

Description: |
Agnes. Here is the first of two successive original photos that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 24 June 1972. Shown here near the 4th Street Footbridge are Penn Central engines #7948 and #2438. They're departing the Yard on their way up the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains with a "high-and-wide extra" bound for Pittsburgh and points West. It's just about the only thing moving out of Altoona in the wake of Hurricane Agnes. In this context, the Fireman has just received train orders from the WORKS Tower Operator. When the end of the train and the cabin car reach this point, the train's Conductor will also receive orders by the same means. The elaborate light tower depicted at the right was constructed originally for the New York World's Fair in 1939 and was re-erected here after the Fair closed. |
