Title:
CB&Q SD9 438
Description:
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad SD9 438 at Derby, Colorado on April 2, 1960, photographer unknown, print by Tom Klinger, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in October 1957 ( c/n 23617 ) on EMD Order 5547. It became BN 6185, and later, BNSF 6177. The CB&Q acquired a total of 80 SD9's built on four orders ( Order 5313 for 20 units numbered 325-344, Order 5399 for 30 units numbered 345-374, Order 5547 for 10 units numbered 430-439, and Order 5549 for 20 units numbered 440-459 ). In addition, subsidiary Colorado & Southern acquired 23 SD9's on two orders. This particular locomotive was built with a single fuel tank, as were all the SD9's in the 400 series, making it a freight-only unit.
