PRR 4229, EP-20, c. 1966 |
Description: |
AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by R. von dem Hagen that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1966. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4229 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #4229 was constructed as number "5869" in April of 1949, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and later renumbered "4229" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. In this context, they're rounding the Curve and heading down "The Mountain" to Altoona with an eastbound passenger train. At the far right is the PRR's Milepost 242. You can almost smell the brakeshoe smoke! |
