Title:
PRR 6923, M-1, 1950
Description:
FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 4 July 1950. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6923 and another locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #6923 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during November of 1926 and retired in June of 1957 after 31 years of faithful service. In this context, they're departing the Station with a passenger train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Johnstown and points West. Partially visible in the background are some of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection.
