No info with this old print. The date is a very ruff estimate... The scene looks a bit like Whitefield but not from a common angle. In earlier photographs of this locomotive the generator is mounted ahead of the stack, here it looks to be back near the cab. The gondola appears to be MEC 8200 but the origional photo is rather fuzzy and I dont think MEC had any gondolas in this number range... /DL |

MEC’s #470 was the last active steam on the Maine Central. In this 1938 scene 470 is at the Lewiston Upper platform headed west. C2016 this locomotive has been purchased by the New England Steam Corp from the City of Waterville for eventual restoration at Washington Jct outside of Ellsworth. Much more info is on line at: http://www.newenglandsteam.org/ MEC 470 was a MEC Class C3 built at Schenectady by ALCO in June 1924. It made the last run on the Maine Central dead heading back to Waterville after it’s last pubilc run on the Main Line between Portland and Bangor. #470 was retired in June of 1954. Nice photo by A. L. Douchette of the last 4-6-2 Pacific built by Alco-Schenectady in 1924 for Maine Central. A note on the back of the photo states "#470 The l.ast steam engine to run on the MECRR - from Portland to Bangor 6/13/54 (last passenger run)." Specs - class C-3, 73" drivers, 185 psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine wt 268,300 lb, tractive effort of 37,697 lb. Rebuilt in 1933 by the MEC shops. Now on display in Waterville, ME. UPDATE - thanks to Jerry LaBoda (see comment below), this loco is now under restoration with its future as a beautiful operating locomotive again! |
