Southern Pacific 2702 and 2703 were the first MP15AC units ever built, placed in service on 27 August 1975. Here they were three months later, interchanging cars with the Illinois Central Gulf at the Espee's EAST BRIDGE YARD, next to the east end of the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE. The headlight in the distance was a Southern Railway geep making a delivery to the Missouri Pacific in the New Orleans Public Belt's EAST BRIDGE YARD, just off to the right. |

Both sets are probably headed to their respective yards at Avondale, at the west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge. SP MP15AC's 2702 and 2703 are returning from the Norfolk Southern's Oliver Yard, while MP 3291, UP 4277, MP 3125 and UP 3265 -- all SD40-2's -- are on their way back from the CSX's Gentilly Yard. SP 2702 and 2703 were the very first MP15AC units built by EMD, and the first dozen of these began their careers in south Louisiana. Although initially operated in cab-to-cab sets, nose-to-nose operation was later adopted. |

At 6:15 on a midsummer evening, the engineer on Southern Pacific MP15AC 2704 was easing back to pick up his caboose - Cotton Belt 60 - in the New Orleans Public Belt's COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD. The caboose was still coupled to the 19-car transfer run he had just brought over from his railroad's AVONDALE YARD, at the west end of the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE; and he was now coupling up so he could return home with this 12-car train. The two tracks on the left were the Illinois Central Gulf's north- and southbound main lines; while the structure on the left was the PUBLIC GRAIN ELEVATOR, facing the Mississippi River. Notice the stored NOPB box cars on the right and in the left background. |

The Southern Pacific loved 1500-horsepower EMD switchers! After buying 240 SW1500's and 12 MP15DC's, the railroad was the first customer for the MP15AC. Between August and October 1975 SP received 58 units,!2702-2759, and the first dozen were assigned to Avondale Yard near New Orleans; although a few of these were used elsewhere across southern Louisiana. Although usually used in pairs and trios, here we see five of the new units -- 2706, 2709, 2708, 2702 and 2703 -- on a westbound transfer run approaching the Huey P. Long Bridge at Central Avenue. The locomotives are literally clean enough to eat off of! These would be the last switch engines purchased by the railroad. |
