According to a plaque under the bell, it was presented to the city of Wilmington in 1964 in commemoration of more than 100 years that Wilmington served as the general headquarters for the ACL and predecessor companies. The bell announced the departure of all passenger trains from the time it was erected in 1856 until the new station was built in 1963. |
