New Orleans Public Service streetcar 970 was inbound on the ST. CLAUDE line in the 100-block of North Rampart Street. Car 970 had been built by Perley Thomas in 1924 and was subsequently equipped with four motors as a test, making its performance comparable to the 1000-series cars; but the experiment was not repeated, so it was unique in the NOPSI fleet. When this photo was taken, the 1000-series cars were all assigned to the ST. CLAUDE line and the 970 was the only car from the 800-973 group officially assigned to this line. This car line was replaced by buses on 1 January 1949, about a year after this photo was taken; the 970 was damaged in a collision with a line car in August 1949 and scrapped in 1952.
