Southern Railway train No. 2 – the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT – was in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal awaiting its 7:00 AM departure with a trio of freshly-repainted E8A locomotives. Lead unit 2929 was unusual because it had received the new green paint scheme while retaining its original 2900-series road number. Most of the seven 2900-series E8’s received new 6900-series numbers when they were repainted green in 1972. Notice that the trucks and underbody tanks had not been repainted on any of the locos!
