Title:
PRR 5752, AP-20, 1952
Description:
Dziobko. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1952. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5752 and another "PA" Class unit whose number is not recorded. #5752 is an AP-20 built by the American Locomotive Company in October of 1947, rated at 2,000 horsepower, later regeared and reclassified as an AFP-20, and retired in September of 1962 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, they've paused at the Altoona Passenger Station to discharge/pick-up passengers and to change both engine and train crews. Note the railroader at the right who is adjusting the coupler so that the "snapper" can couple on and help pull the train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. The buildings in the background are part of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops.
