CO 2-8-8-2 #1578 - Cheaspeake & Ohio |
Description: |
This massive 2-8-8-2 "Chesapeake-type" locomoitve was an undeniable power asset for the C&O. Author Alexander (American Locomotives, 1950) notes that H7 pulled 9,500-ton trains over 113-mile run from Russell, Kentucky to Columbus, Ohio in 5 hours. Averaged 4,400 miles per month until displaced by the 2-10-4s in Ohio and the 2-6-6-6 Alleghenies in the rest of the territory. 30 of the fifty were later leased to the Union Pacific. Specs - class H-7, bldr #59055, 57" drivers, 215 psi boiler pressure, 23x32" cylinder. According to the C&O Historical Society, the engine weight was 572,330 lb and the tractive effort was 108,550 lb.No date or location given for this photo. Heier Industrial photo credit |

RDG 2-8-8-2 #1818 |
Description: |
Although it was built by Baldwin in 1919 as a 2-8-8-2, there is no listing on the site for this configuration. Note that the loco is sitting on a rather large turntable. After several rebuilds, the loco ended up as a 2-8-8-0 after losing the trailing truck. Properties - 55.5" drivers, 210 psi, 26"x32" cylinders, engine weight of 478,500 lb, an impressive tractive effort of 97,818 lb. This is an older Max Miller photo reprint and not his usual quality. |

A massive Great Northern 2-8-8-0 steam engine stored at Superior WI in June 1958. |
Description: |
This was at the end of steam where steam engines were stored in case of need during the fall grain rush across the GN system. The GN had a large yard in Superior WI that remains a large switching yard on the BNSF. 4 BNSF SD9's that once locked couplers with steam engines still remain on the BNSF in 2012. Search for BNSF 1553 on the archive. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2749873. This steam engine was based out of Allouez roundhouse. |

Great Northern steam engine 2-8-8-0 at Mpls Jct MN in 1947 |
Description: |
Normally assigned to the GN iron range division the large articulated engines came through Mpls Jct MN at times and also massive 2-8-8-2s from the Rocky Mt division as well. Note the GN coaling towers at Mpls Jct MN. Horsepower around 6,300 and could haul 200 loaded ore car trains at 14,000 tons without aid. This N3 class articulated ran between Allouez and Hibbing ore mines. Steam lasted thru the fall of 1957 on the GN. Mpls Jct has a wye to turn these large engines, and the wye remains on the BNSF today. |

Great Northern 2-8-8-0 steam engine in the storage lines early in the 1960s. |
Description: |
The GN stored many steam engines around the system thru the 1960s. This is at Superior WI GN yard near Duluth. The GN used these for hauling iron ore as an N3 class on the MN iron range. The boiler operated at 240 psi. Horsepower is estimated at over 6,400 HP. This engine weighed over 280 tons and 110 feet long. A modern diesel engine on average is 4,400 HP in the year 2011. Some N3 class steam engines were still running in 1954. This operated out of the Allouez GN roundhouse. |

SP 2-8-8-2 #4000 - Southern Pacific |
Description: |
This loco is listed in the RRPA database as a 2-8-8-0 since the option of 2-8-8-2 was not available. Built by Baldwin in April of 1909 as a traditional cab in rear 2-8-8-2 (serial #33340), the articulated loco had severe problems with poisonous gases, noise and heat problems while running through 40 miles of tunnels and snow sheds. The problems led SP to develop the unique, redesigned cab forward 2-8-8-2 models. Only two conventional 2-8-8-2's were built by Baldwin for the SP (#4000 & 4001)and they were eventually rebuilt in June of 1923 as cab forward locos (MC-2 class). In 1931, the loco was rebuilt to a simple class AC-1 at the Sacramento Shops. Finally in April of 1948 it was scrapped. Original specs - cab in rear, class MC-1, 57" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 26 & 40x30" cylinders, engine weight of 425,000 lb and tractive effort of 94,880 lb. Unknown photographer and only the year was given for the photo. |

Erie 2-8-8-8-2 #5016 - A Rare Triplex Loco |
Description: |
Between 1914-1916, the Baldwin Locomotive Works built 3 triplex locomotives for the Erie Railroad. Labeled class XA for experimental, they were built to extremely high tractive force to move trains over steep inclines. The locomotive had one high pressure set of cylinders and two low pressure sets. The third set of drivers were under the tender, technically making it the world's largest tank engine in a way! This photo appears to be a Baldwin Works photo taken at Philadelphia. |
