The first electric trains are due to arrive in mid 2021, and service was due to begin in mid 2022. However, there was a recent announcement by Caltrain that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the begining of electric service has been delayed to 2024.

Description:  Caltrain 909 leads a string of bi-levels through College Park station. 909 was built in 1985 for Caltrain, then operated by Caltrans. The unit, along with most of its sister units, were rebuilt by Alstom in 1999 with Caterpillar-driven HEP systems, and Caltrain classified the rebuilt locomotives as F40PH-2CATs. 300th CA image.

The two venerable units, the 906 and 909, have operated on the Peninsula Commute for almost 40 years, having been built in 1985 by EMD. The 909 has just arrived on train #410 southbound, while 906 will soon depart on train #413 northbound. Note that 906 is operating with a set of Caltrains Bombardier Bi-Level coaches, while 909 is running with the older Nippon-Sharyo gallery cars.

Description:  Caltrain 909 shoves train #711 out of San Jose. The express train will make the 50 mile journey in 1 hour and 6 minutes. 909 was the 10th unit in the original 18 unit order for EMD F40PH-2s by the state of California for Peninsula Commute service. These 18 were supplemented by two additional EMD F40s in 1987, a trio of Boise-built F40PH-2Cs in 1998, and half a dozen MP36PH-3Cs in 2003.
